You may remember the Colonial Pipeline cyber attack back in May. They are one of the biggest gas and diesel movers in the country with over 3,000 miles of pipelines. Colonial is responsible for 32% of the US fuel transportation.
The ransomware attack prompted them to shut down their entire system, disrupting the fuel supply chain. The organization that hit them knew what they were doing. They vetted their financial status and then asked for $5 million. Three days after the initial attack, Colonial Pipeline paid the $5 million in order to run the supply again.
This attack illustrates the importance of having a plan in place to prevent an attack from happening. Even if you have a good backup, it takes a long time to restore the backup. Make sure you have good measures to protect your assets and your business. You never know how it will hit you, how long it will take to recover, or what the impact will be on your business.
