Microsoft Makes Updates Less Painful

    September 4, 2024

If you’re like most, system updates can feel like a bit of a nuisance—they seem to take forever, and those hefty downloads eat up valuable bandwidth and storage space.

Well, there’s good news on the horizon: Microsoft is set to make your life much easier with the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update.

This update introduces something called ‘checkpoint cumulative updates.' The term might sound a bit technical, but don’t worry–the concept is straightforward and very beneficial.

Normally, Windows receives its updates on a monthly basis, known as cumulative updates. These updates package all the latest fixes and improvements into one bundle, which can be quite large and time-consuming to download and install.

With the introduction of checkpoint cumulative updates, this process is about to change. Instead of downloading a large update each time, your system will now receive smaller, more frequent updates. These updates are incremental changes to the last major update or checkpoint.

So, what does this mean for your business? It’s fantastic news—you’ll spend less time waiting for updates to complete, allowing you to get back to work faster.

And if you’re dealing with a limited internet connection, these smaller updates are a welcome relief. They consume less bandwidth, reducing the chances of disrupting someone else’s video call or online work.

The best part? All of this happens automatically through Windows Update. You won’t need to do anything differently. Your system will continue to run smoothly, with most updates occurring in the background. This seamless experience ensures that your workflow remains uninterrupted.

Microsoft has a history of streamlining updates. When Windows 11 first launched, they introduced new compression technology that reduced update sizes by 40%. With the 24H2 update, they’re taking it even further, making your experience more efficient than ever.

It’s also worth noting that while this new update system will be standard for Windows 11 and the upcoming Windows Server 2025, it’s less likely to be implemented for Windows 10, which is nearing the end of its support life. This provides even more incentive to upgrade your business to Windows 11 if you haven’t done so already.
